Home delivery available from June

Dear friends of Buena Tierra Organic Market, we are glad to inform you that from June we will offer the service of home delivery to the people who will request it. The cost of the delivery will be col. 1,000 for Escazu and Santa Ana. You just have to add to your order the exact address and your phone number. El servicio tendrá un costo de col. 1,000 para las zonas de Escazú y Santa Ana. Interesting news about our Organic Market

Since 2008 we have been able to offer a wide variety of organically grown produce at the Buena Tierra Organic Market.   We work with farms in Zarcero, San Antonio de Escazu, Cartago, Heredia, Valle los Santos and Turrrialba. Most of the farms are part of different associations of Organic producers: Apodar, Aprozonoc, Apot and las Brumas, and their produce is certified by external entities. A few of the farms are in transition which means they are registered with the Ministry of Agriculture and are following organic procedures until a 4 year transition period is completed and their products can be certified. 

There are some products that come from small farms that have not yet started the certification process but we have visited and seen that their produce is cultivated without agrochemicals and their methods are compatible with organic certification. We also periodically take products that are not certified for chemical analysis at CICA in the university of Costa Rica to check for residual agrochemicals.

On our board each product is labelled according to the status of the farm it is grown on.

By buying from the farms and arranging transport from each area, we save the offer guaranteed sale of their produce. We donate any surplus food to an organization that runs soup kitchen in Alajuelita once a week, a daycare service in Alajuelita, and the neighbouring kindergarten which is supported by the Damas Voluntarias de Escazu. We pay a weekly rent that also supports their projects.

Shoppers, please bring your own bags and reduce the amount of plastic used at the market. When needed we use biodegradable plastic bags and provide them to the other vendors too.

Our aim is to offer excellent quality organically grown produce at a convenient location.

Informaciones interesantes sobre la organización de nuestra Feria Orgánica

En la Feria Orgánica Buena Tierra, desde el año 2008, nos hemos dedicado en ofrecer una gran variedad de productos orgánicos. Trabajamos con fincas ubicadas en Zarcero, San Antonio de Escazú, Cartago, Heredia, Valle de los Santos y Turrialba. La mayoría de las fincas pertenecen a diferentes asociaciones de productores orgánicos: Apodar, Aprozonoc, Apot y Las Brumas, y sus productos son certificados por entidades externas. Algunas fincas están en transición, es decir que ya se registraron con el Ministerio de Agricultura (MAG) y siguen los procedimientos de agricultura orgánica durante un periodo de transición de 4 años antes de poder obtener la certificación.

Algunos de  los productos que vendemos se cultivan en pequeñas fincas que no han empezado todavía el proceso de certificación. Hemos visitado a estas fincas averiguando que no se utilicen agroquímicos y que sus métodos sean compatibles con la certificación orgánica. Además periódicamente llevamos algunos de los productos no certificados a la UCR donde el CICA por medio de análisis química averigua la existencia de agroquímicos.

En nuestro cartel hemos etiquetado cada producto según el estatus de la finca que lo produce.

Comprando de las fincas y organizando el transporte, ahorramos a los productores tiempo y gastos y les garantizamos la venta total de su mercancía. 

Todo lo que sobra lo donamos a una organización que una vez por semana distribuye comida a unos 80 niños de Alajuelita, a una guardería siempre de Alajuelita y al kínder a la par de las instalaciones donde hacemos la feria que es respaldado por las Damas Voluntarias de Escazú a las cuales pagamos un alquiler semanal que las ayuda en el desarrollo de sus iniciativas benéficas.

Les pedimos el favor de llegar a la feria con sus bolsos para reducir la cantidad de plástico.

Nosotros, si necesario, utilizamos bolsos biodegradables y los facilitamos a los otros vendedores.

El objetivo de nuestra iniciativa es hacer que cada vez más personas tengan acceso a productos orgánicos de excelente calidad.

market changes

There have been many changes in the recent weeks at our market. We have sourced new farms in San Antonio de Escazu and around Cartago and Turrialba to supply our produce and have managed to lower our prices on many products. We still receive some produce from Apodar in Zarcero, which come with the organic sticker, for the  produce coming from other farms we are in the process of preparing a board which will show exactly the status of the farm where the product is grown, either certified organic, in transition (registered with MAG and in the process of applying for the organic certification) or grown without agrochemicals. Most of the farms we have visited personally and talked with the growers about their cultivation methods and are assured that the products they apply to the crops and soil are compatible with organic certification. As well as the association of organic producers in Zarcero Apodar, we are receiving products from Apot, Aprozonoc and Las Brumas, associations of organic growers around Cartago. Being part of one of these associations means that we can be confident that the produce that comes from these participating farms is certified organic.
 We have also aimed to reduce the amount of plastic used at the market. Since we started the market we have used biodegradable plastic bags, but some of the produce coming bagged from the farms was in conventional plastic bags, we are now selling apples, carrots and potatoes loose, it is a bit more work for the shopper, and it takes a little longer at the checkout, but most people are happy to see less plastic around their vegetables. Over the next few weeks, we will try having some bags pre weighed, for those who prefer.
We welcome any suggestions which would make shopping at the market easier and more enjoyable.

Hemos hecho varias cambios a la feria en semanas recientes. Hemos encontrado nuevas fincas en San Antonio de Escazu, Cartago y Turrialba para proveer la feria con productos nuevos y hemos logrado bajar precios en muchos de las verduras. Todavía recibimos productos de Apodar en Zarcero, estos vienen marcados con esticker de certificación orgánica. Para los productos que vienen de otras fincas estamos preparando una pizarra que va mostrar si el producto vienen de una finca certificada organica, en transición (registrado con el MAG  y en proceso de recibir el certificación) o cultivado sin agroquimicos. La  mayoria de las fincas hemos visitado personalmente y hablado con los productores acerca de sus metodos de cultivación, nos aseguran que solamente aplican al suelo y las hortalizas productos que están compatible con una certificación organica.
Ademas de Asociacion de productores orgánicos de Zarcero, Apodar, recibimos productos de Apot, Aprozonoc y las Brumas, asociacones de familias productores orgánicos  de la region de de Cartago.
Siendo parte de estas asociaciones permite que podemos estar seguros que los productos que vienen de estas fincas son orgánicas.
Otra cambio que pueden ver es que ya recibimos la mayoría de productos al granel, para evitar el uso de bolsas plasticas. Es un poco mas trabajo para el cliente, pero sentimos que esta bien recibido el cambio. Tenemos disponible bolsas biodegradables y vamos a tener unos kilos de productos listos para los que prefieren.
