market changes

There have been many changes in the recent weeks at our market. We have sourced new farms in San Antonio de Escazu and around Cartago and Turrialba to supply our produce and have managed to lower our prices on many products. We still receive some produce from Apodar in Zarcero, which come with the organic sticker, for the  produce coming from other farms we are in the process of preparing a board which will show exactly the status of the farm where the product is grown, either certified organic, in transition (registered with MAG and in the process of applying for the organic certification) or grown without agrochemicals. Most of the farms we have visited personally and talked with the growers about their cultivation methods and are assured that the products they apply to the crops and soil are compatible with organic certification. As well as the association of organic producers in Zarcero Apodar, we are receiving products from Apot, Aprozonoc and Las Brumas, associations of organic growers around Cartago. Being part of one of these associations means that we can be confident that the produce that comes from these participating farms is certified organic.
 We have also aimed to reduce the amount of plastic used at the market. Since we started the market we have used biodegradable plastic bags, but some of the produce coming bagged from the farms was in conventional plastic bags, we are now selling apples, carrots and potatoes loose, it is a bit more work for the shopper, and it takes a little longer at the checkout, but most people are happy to see less plastic around their vegetables. Over the next few weeks, we will try having some bags pre weighed, for those who prefer.

Hemos hecho varias cambios a la feria en semanas recientes. Hemos encontrado nuevas fincas en San Antonio de Escazu, Cartago y Turrialba para proveer la feria con productos nuevos y hemos logrado bajar precios en muchos de las verduras. Todavía recibimos productos de Apodar en Zarcero, estos vienen marcados con esticker de certificación orgánica. Para los productos que vienen de otras fincas estamos preparando una pizarra que va mostrar si el producto vienen de una finca certificada organica, en transición (registrado con el MAG  y en proceso de recibir el certificación) o cultivado sin agroquimicos. La  mayoria de las fincas hemos visitado personalmente y hablado con los productores acerca de sus metodos de cultivación, nos aseguran que solamente aplican al suelo y las hortalizas productos que están compatible con una certificación organica.
Ademas de Asociacion de productores orgánicos de Zarcero, Apodar, recibimos productos de Apot, Aprozonoc y las Brumas, asociacones de familias productores orgánicos  de la region de de Cartago.
Siendo parte de estas asociaciones permite que podemos estar seguros que los productos que vienen de estas fincas son orgánicas.
Otra cambio que pueden ver es que ya recibimos la mayoría de productos al granel, para evitar el uso de bolsas plasticas. Es un poco mas trabajo para el cliente, pero sentimos que esta bien recibido el cambio. Tenemos disponible bolsas biodegradables y vamos a tener unos kilos de productos listos para los que prefieren.
